Standing alongside the River Thames at Millbank, the Tate opened in 1897 on a donation from its principal benefactor, the sugar magnate, Sir Henry Tate. Today the Gallery houses one of the world's most important art collections, including paintings by Hogarth, Gainsborough and Reynolds. The modern collection encompasses works from Braque and Picasso to David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein. In the adjoining Clore Gallery is the Turner collection with some 200 oil paintings and many drawings bequeathed to the nation by Britain's greatest artist. J M W Turner.
Admission to the free collection displays at Tate Britain and Tate Modern is unticketed.
